Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics

A patient after PAOOAt Egger Orthodontics, our orthodontists offer you the specialized treatment possible to help with any jaw or tooth alignment problems that you may have. However, when it comes to the use of some of the orthodontic appliances and treatment plans that we offer, some of our patients can get intimidated by the amount of time it takes to get the teeth that they want. Traditional braces, for example, can a year or more to gradually shift your teeth into their new positions. If this time required seems bothersome, then periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) may be the right choice for you.

What Is PAOO?

PAOO uses a combination of traditional orthodontics and oral surgery to get you to the great, straight smile that you want much sooner than other conventional treatments. Using PAOO, teeth can be adjusted multiple times faster, permitting for a much reduced treatment time of three to eight months. The first step of the process involves a small surgical procedure, done while you are under general anesthesia. This takes out a small amount of your tooth-bearing bone’s external surface.

The reason that we do this is to temporarily decrease the amount of mineral content in your bone. This allows your braces to swiftly move your teeth into the right position with much less resistance and time required. Though removing part of your bone’s mineral content may sound concerning, it is quite safe. The bone heals quickly and actually becomes stronger than it used to be before the procedure.

How Does PAOO Work So Quickly?

Over the last few decades, the trend in orthodontic technology has been to improve the treatment of patients by resorting to an ever-changing variety of materials for your bands, brackets, archwires, and bonding materials. While these have made traditional braces more efficient than ever, they do not address the length of such fixed orthodontic treatments that take one to three years to complete. PAOO changes this dynamic by instead inspecting your bone physiology and altering how the bone itself responds to orthodontic force. This is more effective and less painful than simply applying greater orthodontic force or tighter braces. It also allows for a much faster treatment than you might expect.

How Do I Know If PAOO Is Right For Me?

The time saved through the use of PAOO is incredibly valuable to many of our patients at Egger Orthodontics. Teenagers who do not want to wear braces for up to 3 years while they are in high school are often attracted to this treatment plan. Some adults have professional or social responsibilities that make it difficult to wear braces for such a long period. So long as your permanent teeth are all present, then you should be able to undergo the PAOO procedure if you want to.
